Please join us for the release of the Neighborhood Story Project and Backstreet Cultural Museum's book Fire in the Hole: The Spirit Work of Fi Yi Yi and the Mandingo Warriors on St. Joseph's Night!
We we will gather on Annette Street where Victor Harris, the Big Chief of Fi Yi Yi, began the tribe in 1984 to celebrate the book release and 53 years of continuous masking--more than any Mardi Gas Indian on record!
We will parade with Fi Yi Yi and the Mandingo Warriors, the Tremé Brass Band, Big Chief Sunpie and the Northside Skull and Bone Gang, and baby dolls over to the Backstreet Cultural Museum for the book signing. The hard back book is $35. A collaboration between the tribe and the museum, it features more than 200 color images taken by the official Fi Yi Yi photographer, Jeffrey David Ehrenreich. Cash or credit card will be accepted. Proceeds will go to support Fi Yi Yi, the Backstreet, and the Neighborhood Story Project. An altar will be set up to celebrate both St. Joseph's Day and the Feast of Legba. Everyone is welcome to bring offerings.
At nightfall, Fi Yi Yi and the Mandingo Warriors will go out into the neighborhood again and will return once more for a final celebration and book signings.
