Black Global Citizenship and Cultural Work in the Digital Age
Artist Talk with Four-hour DJ Set to Follow

DJ Lynnée Denise will join producer Osunlade in a discussion about Black global citizenship, cultural work in the digital age, house music as it relates to African traditional religions and other topics related to migration and spirituality. Their conversation will span multiple decades, places, spaces and genres of music and land in the deep connection both artists feel to New Orleans' Congo Square.

About:

DJ Lynnée Denise is an artist and scholar who incorporates self-directed project based research into interactive workshops, music events and public lectures that offer participants the opportunity to develop an intimate relationship with under-explored topics related to the cultural history of marginalized communities. She coined the term «DJ Scholarship» to explain DJ culture as a mix-mode research practice, both performative and subversive in its ability to shape and definre social experiences, shifting the public perception of the role of a DJ from being a purveyor of party music to an archivsist, cultural worker and information specialist who assesses, collects, preserves, and provides access to music determined to have long-term value. Her work is informed and inspired by underground cultural movements, the 1980s, migration studies, theories of escape, and electronic music of the African Diaspora. With support from the Jerome Foundation Travel Grant, The Astrae Lesbian Foundation for Justice, Idea Capital, Residency BiljmAIR (Netherlands) and The Rauschenberg Artists as Activists Grant, she has been able to resource her performative research on a local, national and global level. She's the product of the Historically Black Fisk University, with a MA from the historically radical San Francisco State University Ethnic Studies department, and works as an adjunct professor in the Pan African Studies Depertment at California State University Los Angeles.

Osunlade is an artist who personifies art. His music as well as his being create unified melodies manifested with balance, life and wisdom. A respected and emulated New York-based producer, DJ, and label chief, Osunlade grew up in a musical environment. As a youngster, he took piano lessons and sang in his church choir. At the age of 17, he joined the cast of the popular children's show Sesame Street as a presenter. He later produced music for the program. During the late '80s, he started working as a producer and session hand. Since starting out, he has leant his talents to records by Musiq, Patti LaBelle, Najee, India Arie, and Eric Benet. In 1999, Osunlade established the Yoruba label and began releasing deep house productions of his own while cultivating new artists. For his first album, 2001's Paradigm, the producer hooked up with the U.K.'s Soul Jazz label, which released the excellent LP and increased his profile significantly as a result. Easily one of the most gifted producers of soul/funk-influenced deep house, Osunlade — an ordained priest in the African religion of Ifa — graces everything he touches with spiritual, uplifting vibes.

This is event is made possible with the geneorus support of Three Keys at the Ace Hotel. Three Keys is a venue dedicated wholly to the magic that happens in New Orleans.
